Despite the losses I endured since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1990, I am looking at my life in a completely new way, through an entirely different lens.
Today I am more patient, empathetic, optimistic, and courageous, and my life is more joyful, purposeful, and fulfilling than ever.
Living with MS has helped me to let go of the past, become a better person today, and look forward to a future I never thought was possible.
If you don't believe me, you're probably rolling your eyes, frowning, or raising your eyebrows. I know you believe me if you're smiling inside and out and nodding, yes!
Which one are you?
However, it doesn't matter since I'm telling you the truth.
Before MS, I was a good person, and I liked myself. Today I am a great person and love who I am because I live with MS.
In my 30 years of living with multiple sclerosis, I have learned that what I see and how I shape my life is determined by what lens I see through. So, if I view myself through a "whoa is me" lens, that's how I feel. As a result of this lens, I think life has dealt me a crappy hand, and I cannot or am unwilling to see anything positive.
In reality, this is not the case.
I see my life with MS through the lens of living each day as my best self. Every day I make decisions that will positively affect my life and how I perceive it.
I have created a personal manifesto to give myself the best chance of succeeding.
A personal manifesto is a declaration of what I want in life. It helps me prioritize what's important to me and what I want to achieve. I think of a personal manifesto as the ultimate bucket list.
These are the statements in my manifesto:
I trust the future and what it holds for me.
I am calm and relaxed.
I know how to ask for help.
I am grateful for all the good in my life.
I am hopeful about the future.
I easily attract positive people into my life.
I am nourished by my friendships.
I enjoy financial abundance.
I treasure the good I find in my life with MS.
I love my energy and momentum to move forward in life.
I am in tune with my body and know how to stay well.
I live at peace and with confidence and contentment.
I am fearless with MS.
I am inspired and empowered by my newfound purpose.
So there it is. What will be on your manifesto?
These statements explain why and how I live my best life with MS.
In conclusion, having a positive mindset helps me to live my best life with multiple sclerosis (MS). In addition, being optimistic also allows me to manage my symptoms and make positive lifestyle choices to improve my overall well-being. By staying proactive, I can create a meaningful and joyful life not defined by my MS diagnosis. I know that MS does not define me, and I have the power to shape my life in a way that allows me to thrive.
My message to you is simple:
Embrace the present.
Cherish your relationships.
Pursue your passions.
Strive towards your goals because life with MS can be enjoyable and meaningful.
